Water Resource Systems – Operation Optimization

A water system usually has various water sources that serve the water and irrigation needs of several areas. Water can come from various resources (dams, boreholes, etc.) that are part of the system. For example, all dams and drilling systems along the southern pipeline are connected to the southern pipeline and water is distributed throughout almost all of Cyprus.

System optimization problem

At the water system level, the problem is: given supply, how do we best meet demand? From where and how much water will go to each consumer

1. INPUT: Διαθέσιμο Νερό (Προσφορά)

  • Available water resources (surface and groundwater)
  • Exploitation projects (dams, reservoirs, boreholes, transmission network)

2. Factors entering the problem (Criteria, Limitations)

  • Cost (Transfer distance, pumping depth, altitudes)
  • Environmental (ecological supply, salinization, etc.).
  • Other (cost of agricultural compensation, flood protection vs electricity, etc., electricity vs irrigation needs,)
  • Long-term: Cost of new projects, Long-term environmental impact etc.

3. OUTPUT: Δεδομένη Ζήτηση (Ζήτηση)

  • Water Supply Needs (Priority ?? Tourism, Industrial, Residential)
  • Irrigation Needs (Priority ?? Greenhouses, export crops

It includes the mathematical formulation of the problem and its solution using a computer.
