4.2. Water intake from rivers

Surface water utilization projects

For the utilization of surface waters the typical categories of projects are:

  1. Water intakes with or without storage
  2. Dams

Categories of projects based on their main use:

  1. Water storage for water supply/irrigation purposes
  2. Of production of electrical power
  3. Flood protection
  4. Combination of the above

1. Water intakes without storage

The picture shows a water intake project at the confluence of two watercourses. We distinguish:
1. Water intake with grill.
2. Boxed duct
3. Overflow (for high flow and flow restriction in the pipeline)
4. Fish ladder (for fish)

Water intake on the riverbed with grate on the overflow (cases of relatively constant flow)
